Realtime Muni information for the iPhone
Posted by Joe Hughes under Mobile, Portland, Realtime, San Francisco
It’s been a couple weeks since my last post about transit and the iPhone, and we’re starting to see some iPhone-optimized transit information.
Turncolor, a software startup, has created MuniTime, a pretty iPhone widget that counts down the time to the next bus or train arrival at a particular stop. MuniTime currently supports San Francisco Muni and Portland Streetcar, but I assume that it could easily be adapted to any of the many systems that use NextBus for vehicle tracking. I really like MuniTime; my main wish-list item for them is an easy way to bookmark a particular stop, so that I can easily jump to the right one as I’m roaming around town.
Also, this weekend I threw together iNextMuni, a version of the NextMuni mobile site that has a more iPhone-like style. This was mostly an excuse for me to play around with Joe Hewitt’s iUI interface library, but maybe some of you will find it useful.
Have you come across (or built!) other iPhone-optimized transit applications? Let me know in the comments!

I took Trimet’s API and made it into Trimet Tracker, a site designed for the iPhone that makes it easy to find out when the next bus/train/streetcar is going to arrive. You can also save your favorite stops so you don’t have to hunt your stop down each time.

Nice work, Matt! Good use of the TriMet APIs–this is a great example of how everyone benefits when an agency makes it easy for developers to reuse their data.

I just finished http://iphone511.com which is a iPhone-friendly version of 511.org. It’s got a trip planner too!

Nice work, Braden! I could definitely see myself using this. Are you feeding the trip planning queries to 511.org and scraping/reformatting the results?

Yep, with some fanciness. For example, 511.org will ask you to clarify your results, even if there is only one option. Like you typed “Market and 4th” and they want to make sure you mean “Market St and 4th St”. So I just go ahead and accept that for you. So I submit that and scrape/reformat the results. Also I generate my own links to the maps program.
Sadly, I lost my iPhone a couple days before I finished the program. :-( Finally ordered a new one yesterday.

Awesome. I was just about to start building my own 511 that does exactly that. Nice work!
