“Throw away your screen scraper”, BART has released their schedules to the public in Google Transit Feed Spec format!

BusFinder is a real-time arrivals display that’s been installed at 30 stops in Arlington, VA. Seems like a great idea if it reduces the uncertainty at more stops, but waiting 30 seconds to get the arrival info seems a bit long.

Article about an unaffiliated designer’s quest to get his subway map adopted by the New York Subway. It’s nice that the MTA folks took the time to meet with him and talk it over.

Daydreaming about using webcams and vision detection to determine when a streetcar is at a particular stop. Does anyone know of any nontraditional vehicle tracking systems like this that people have put together?

Fascinating hack by MetroRiderLA–they’re having their posse enter transit stations as Yelp locations so that it’ll be easy to see what restaurants and businesses are nearby, and vice-versa. Apparently they’ve made good progress over the last few months!

The MBTA has developed new maps that help people learn more about the buses that operate in their area. We need more of this sort of thing; uncertainty about where buses go and when is a huge impediment to increasing ridership.

Discussion by one of the Transit Camp protagonists comparing “traditional” activism with ____ Camp activism. I spent some time going to “traditional” transit activist meetings and the negativity (and infighting!) was a big turn-off.

GoLoco is a carpooling social network with a trip planner-style interface, the sort of thing that many people have been talking about for years. Godspeed!

Discussion of how far people are willing to walk to transit routes. In my own experience areas that make the pedestrian feel impatient, bored, or unsafe are bigger factors than actual distance. Can a trip planner encode “psychological distance”?
